***UPDATE – No one showed up to complete the work and Highways finally responded a month later to say that the stream next to Stoney Street may be a spawning site for salmon and brown trout. The spawning season is identified from January to March, which would have meant restrictions in the consent allowing them to enter the watercourse and this would limit their ability to deliver this scheme in the last quarter of the financial year.

This means the scheme has been carried forward into 2024/25 with the intention to carry out the repairs in the later end of the summer, when fewer LDC restrictions will be imposed when working in the stream.

A resident notes: This is quite surprising as it is a winterbourne stream and I have never, ever seen a fish in there, I hope they fix it before the road collapses and my house falls into the stream. My habitat is also threatened.***

Highways have confirmed that Stoney Street will be closed for 5 days, from 29th January until the 2nd of February in order to carry out essential works to the retaining walls which hold up the road, after it subsided in several places last year.

The contractor has indicated that access for Emergency Services through the site is not permitted on this occasion.

For any further information about this closure please contact Somerset Highways on 0300 123 2224, quoting reference: ttro637752W(WS)

Ros has kindly offered to let any Stoney Street residents who are unable to find a spot to park in the village during the roadworks to park at East Luccombe Farm, by prior arrangement and at their own risk. You can contact her to arrange this on 01643 862493.
